U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick R-Georgia spoke to the Georgia Senate on Tuesday March, 18 about finding common ground during an era where partisanship and economic challenges are unprecedented.

McCormick thanked Georgia’s state senators for their work in the General Assembly. He spoke about the $37 trillion deficit the country faces.

“I’m not going to celebrate this, this is going to be hard times,” McCormick said. “We’re going to have to tighten our belt a little bit and realize that the government is not the answer to everything.”

McCormick spoke about not relying on the government to fix the education system, stating that teaching children begins at home.

“Don’t rely on the government to decide what’s moral and right. The government’s not God. The government’s not Church, The government’s not community. The government’s not family. The government is government,” McCormick said.

He spoke about what will happen to Social Security if funding for the program is not reformed.  He warned of a 21% cut to benefits in about seven years.

“Let’s work together to make sure we preserve everything everybody is supposed to get,” McCormick said.

McCormick called for bipartisan solutions to the country’s tough problems.

“Let’s come together as Americans first and realize that we have one goal,” McCormick said. “To keep liberty and to keep this Union and to benefit the American people”.
